Maurice Binder – The man behind the Bond title sequences

For fourteen James Bond movies, starting with the first, Dr. No, Maurice Binder weaved his magic on the opening credits in a style that was unique and much loved. To the theme tunes of movies such as You Only Live Twice, Thunderball and Live and Let Die, Binder filmed scantily clad, or naked models and then hide most of their skin with special effects, images projected on their bodies, or even lasers.

Maurice Binder was also responsible for perhaps the most iconic part of a James Bond movie, the view down the barrel of a gun as Bond walks, twists and shoots the gun holder, then as the blood is flowing down the screen, the opening of the barrel fades to the start of the movie.

When Binder was not involved with Bond, he worked on movies such as The Sea Wolves, The Wild Geese, Gold (all featuring Roger ’3rd Bond’ Moore), Battle of Britain, Shout at the Devil, and perhaps the most fun one to watch, Barbarella.

21 Days of Bond # 18 – Tomorrow Never Dies

Plot:

A newspaper mogul attempts to start a war, so he can sell newspapers about it

Bond:

Pierce Brosnan

Girl:

Wai Lin (Michelle Yeoh)
Paris Carver (Teri Hatcher)

Bad Guy:

Elliot Carver (Jonathan Pryce)

Theme Tune:

Tommorow never dies – Sheryl Crow

The first really good Brosnan Bond movie, Tomorrow has everything that a Bond movie needs. A great over the top evil madman, beautiful women, a brilliant car chase, and some spectacular stunts. The special effects are first rate, a big change from the previous movie.

21 Days of Bond # 17 – Goldeneye

Plot:

Bond must stop a secret Russian space weapon that is in the hands of a traitor and a Russian general.

Bond:

Pierce Brosnan

Girl:

Natalya Fyodorovna Semyonova (Izabella Scorupco)

Bad Guy:

Alec Trevelyan (Sean Bean)
Xenia Onatopp (Famke Janssen)

Theme Tune:

Goldeneye – Tina Turner

The first Bond movie starring Brosnan, Goldeneye is a good and bad movie. There are some great movies, let down by some very bad effects that look cheap and clumsy. On the positive side though, the opening sequence is truly breath taking and the tank chase is a classic.

21 Days of Bond # 16 – Licence To Kill

Plot:

To avenge a savage attack on Felix Leiter and his new bride, Bond becomes a rogue agent to get the drug lord who ordered the attack

Bond:

Timothy Dalton

Girl:

Pam Bouvier (Carey Lowell)
Lupe Lamora (Talisa Soto)

Bad Guy:

Franz Sanchez (Robert Davi)

Theme Tune:

Licence to Kill – Gladys Knight

A total departure from previous Bonds, this is a violent, angry movie the likes of which would never have been made if Connery, Lazenby or Moore were playing Bond. There are a lot of good scenes and stunts but this is such a different movie that it doesn’t really feel like a Bond movie.

21 Days of Bond # 15 – The Living Daylights

Plot:

A Russian defector isn’t what he appears to be when Bond tries to stop an arms dealer from starting world war 3

Bond:

Timothy Dalton

Girl:

Kara Milovy (Maryam d’Abo)

Bad Guy:

General Georgi Koskov (Jeroen Krabbe)
Brad Whitaker (Joe Don Baker)

Theme Tune:

The Living Daylights – A-ha

A new Bond and a new style. Gone is the witty Roger Moore Bond and in is a serious, violent, take charge Bond. With a great opening sequence, The Living Daylights was a major direction change for Bond that works to an extent. While all the major pieces of a Bond movie, stunts, girls, action, fights are all there, the sudden seriousness of Bond does make the movie feel different, almost like the earlier movies.

21 Days of Bond # 14 – A View To A Kill

Plot:

A industrialist plans to control the supply of microchips by sinking Silicon Valley

Bond:

Roger Moore

Girl:

Stacey Sutton (Tanya Roberts)

Bad Guy:

Max Zorin (Christopher Walken)
Mayday (Grace Jones)

Theme Tune:

A View to a Kill – Duran Duran

Apart from the fact that it is filmed at two of the modern wonders of the world (Golden Gate Bridge & the Eiffel Tower) this feels like one of the most cheesy Bond movies. It still has some great scenes, and the fire engine chase is pretty cool but it just seems to be missing something. This is also Roger Moore’s last Bond movie.

21 Days of Bond # 13 – Octopussy

Plot:

A murdered British agent sends Bond onto the trail of a plot to explode a nuclear bomb to start world war three

Bond:

Roger Moore

Girl:

Octopussy (Maud Adams)
Magda (Kristina Wayborn)

Bad Guy:

Kamal Khan (Louis Jourdan)
Gobinda (Kabir Bedi)
General Orlov (Steven Berkoff)

Theme Tune:

All Time High – Rita Coolidge

An average James Bond movie, not the most memorable but still very enjoyable. Perhaps stemming from the fact that most of the stunts are not that original. The locations are spectacular, and it is enjoyable to see but overall, just an average movie.

21 Days of Bond # 12 – For Your Eyes Only

Plot:

A British cyper machine is taken from a sunken spy trawler and Bond must stop it from getting into the wrong hands

Bond:

Roger Moore

Girl:

Melina Havelock (Carole Bouquet)
Bibi Dahl (Lynn-Holly Johnson)

Bad Guy:

Aristotle Kristatos (Julian Glover)

Theme Tune:

For Your Eyes Only – Sheena Easton

A return to the basic good Bond movie from the fantastical Moonraker. Gone are the huge special effects and sets. Instead, you have a good story, a couple of good stunts and a big fistfight along with the silliest Bond car ever. While a step down from Moonraker and The Spy Who Loved Me, a good movie none the less.
