Sci Fi September # 12 – Starship Troopers

Planet Earth is being pounded by asteroids, directed by a species of giant spider like creatures on a planet far awy from Earth. A group of innocent young kids sign up to fight for various reasons and discover that war isn’t a good palce to be.

Directed by Paul (RoboCop) Verhoeven, Troopers is violent, disturbing and action packed. It portrays a future that is a fascist world where you have to be citizen to be able to vote, get pregnant or so forth. If you aren’t a citizen, then you are just a civilian. People join up to become citizens.

It seems that with every movie about a group of soldiers waiting to go to war there is a scene of us against fellow soldiers. There is also a very annoying un-requited love story between Dizzy and Rico, who still loves Ibanez. Personally given the choice between Denise Richards as Ibanez and Dina Meyer as Dizzy, I knew I wouldn’t be chasing the toothy Richards.

As this is pretty much a bug hunt movie, it does tend to lend some items from Aliens, including the drop ship drop. It even has someone sleeping ala Hicks.

I find it slightly offensive that every single soldier appears to be handsome or beautiful with no visible scars or issues other than lucky/unlucky in love. There are lots of extras running around so its often hard to work out who is who, which doesn’t really make a difference since its hard to care about pretty boys and cute girls with crushes.

There is a lot of action and explosions and violence and so forth but that about it, you have the love story which pretty well sucks, and you know if Dizzy and Rico get it together, one of them is going to die pretty quickly afterwards. The bugs are fun but there are lots of cooler bug aliens in the movies.

Starship Troopers passes the time but doesn’t do much else than that.
