Sci Fi September # 10 – Demolition Man

A hard nosed cop is cryogeniclly frozen along with the criminal he caught only to be woken in the future to try and track down the criminal who has escaped with the help of some inside information.
Sylvester Stallone stars as John Spartan, a brutal cop who is even considered too extreme for his own force. Wesley Snipes is Simon Phoenix, a mad evil genius who likes to kill people. Lots of other names such as Sandra Bullock, Benjamin Bratt, Denis Leary and Nigel Hawthorne fill out the cast.
Anyone expecting a serious science fiction movie with social commentary about the future of the world is sadly going to be disappointed. Snipes is a sarcastic, violent villain while Stallone pretty much is Stallone. Demolition Man is funny, often unintentionally, but still enjoyable with one liners and witty remarks that make the viewer smile, even if they don’t mean to.
Like most movies set in the future on Earth, its all guesswork as to the clothes, transportation and language used. The transportation is pretty standard for futuristic movies, mostly looking like concept cars from Japan. The clothes are not what anyone would call stylish but they still work to set the tone. The language is annoying though. They do not instill ‘Joy Joy’ as they would say in the movie.
This is a Stallone movie with a lot of fun, violence and silliness, in other words, a Stallone movie.
