Sci Fi September # 4 – Capricorn One

NASA launches a manned mission to Mars, only something goes wrong in re-entry and the spacecraft doesn’t make it. This doesn’t become a problem except NASA has faked the mission and the astronauts never left Earth. Now the astronauts may not ever left NASA alive.
With the amount of conspiracy theorists believing that man hasn’t landed on the moon, Capricorn One goes one step further and tells the tale of deception and what happens when that deception goes wrong.
The three mars astronauts, played by James Brolin, Sam Waterston and OJ Simpson, are placed in mortal danger and must somehow get the secret out.
This is a conspiracy tale along with an escape twist. Because it doesn’t rely on ‘spaceships’ or futuristic guesses of fashion, architecture and weapons, Capricorn one doesn’t feel as dated as other movies made in 1978 (such as Battlestar Galactica).
Viewed today, Capricorn One would be an interesting TV movie but nothing more. That doesn’t mean it won’t be remade successfully in the near future but as it stands now, its an OK film.
