Book Review – Fatherland – Robert Harris

Book

In an alternative future, Germany won the second world war and is thriving, but when a policeman is called to a dead body, everything that the Fatherland has been built upon starts unraveling.

The story feels very similar to Gorky Park, in that the policeman is an outsider, a non conformist who does his own thing regardless. This is not to say that Fatherland is a rip-off of Gorky Park or visa versa. Both story’s have similarities but are totally different in structure and style. Fatherland imagines a Germany which not only won the second world war but built upon it to become greater than ever. Its very well put together and believable, not something that did happen but something that definitely could have.

Once started, Fatherland is a book that has to be finished as soon as possible. It is pretty much unputdownable! I loved this book!

Book Review – Storehouses of the snow – Edwin Woodard & Heather Woodard

Book

Oh dear. I got three pages into this book before my good sense screamed loudly in my ear, forcing me to put it away until the dreaded day comes when I have nothing at all to read, there is nothing on the television and the internet has been shut down for maintenance. While the idea of the world tilting on its axis is nothing new, The Day The Earth Caught Fire, for instance, I don’t believe I have read such a badly written three pages since I was in school desperately trying to finish an essay.

Badly written is one thing, but the story went straight into the disaster almost without thinking. One moment the President gets a telex from a ship in the Antarctic saying the ice cap is melting and the next he is getting messages from around the world saying the tide is rising…… good way of building suspense… NOT!

I can’t even count this as a book that I have read, but if I ever find a wobbly table, I have the perfect place to put Storehouses of the Snow!
