Book Review – The Wall – Jeff Long

An aging man reunites with his best friend for one more climb. Ahead of them is El Cap, a climb they once conquered together. Behind them the loss of the mans wife. With them, perhaps a curse, perhaps a destiny.
This is a climbing book, not like a Clinton McKinzie book that is about the law and climbing, this is a purely climbing book. Its thrilling to read but if you haven’t climbed (like me) or read other such books (I have) or used to get up every morning during summer holidays to watch a climbing show on TV (like me) then it might be a little difficult to get into.
The climbing technology is what would put a reader off and it would have been nice to have a glossery or something at the back of the book just to explain what each piece of equipement was and what it did. I didn’t really struggle so I was able to just appreciate the fast paced story.
Its a good plot, not letting on until the last possible moment, what the ending is. Good characters keep you interested in the action and the action is definatly there. Great description of the rock and the surrounding area makes you feel as if you are there, although without that sickening feeling of vertigo.
A very enjoyable book, will probably pick up another by the same author!
