Book Review – The Draco Tavern – Larry Niven

Posted on 27th February 2007 by Welshrogue in Book Review 2007,Books

Book

A collection of short stories based around a bar built in Siberia whose patrons are aliens.

I found the book hard to get into. The stories seemed too short and the basis of the tavern didn’t get enough to make it anything other than a short story. There were some good ideas but the stories probably would have been better encompassed in a bigger, more complete story.

100 Reasons Why I Love My Wife – Reason 43

Posted on 26th February 2007 by Welshrogue in 100 Reasons

I no longer need to look for a date go to a wedding.

There is nothing worse than attending a wedding without a beautiful woman by your side. Of course, at the reception, its fun to be single because there is nothing like a wedding to get women in the mood for romance!

As I see it, I have the best of both worlds, a beautiful woman by my side who will then want to become romantic afterwards. My life just gets better and better.

For the record, it doesn’t hurt if I have to dress like a human being for the wedding, as my wife has mentioned in the past, ‘I clean up good’.

Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, the second wedding (at the moment) we will be attending is out of town which means hotel room and no kids. Excuse me while I giggle like a little school girl but its going to be fun!

Movie Review – Bandidas

Posted on 25th February 2007 by Welshrogue in Movie Review 2007,Movies

movie

In order to get a railroad through the country, Mexican farms are being stolen by a banks representative who uses unorthodox methods to get the job done. Against him are two women, one a woman of education and taste, the other a poor peasant woman.

Penelope Cruz & Salma Hayek star in this western comedy. Its all been seen before in other movies but the movie still flows along. There are some great moments, with my favourite scene being the one when Steve Zahn first meets the ladies. I truly believe that he has the best role ever in a movie for just this one scene.

Its a fun movie, not a classic, although it does borrow from nearly every classic western ever. Written by Luc Besson, there are his signature touchs throughout but at the end of the day. This is a good fun movie but nothing more than that.

Book Review – A Salty Piece Of Land – Jimmy Buffett

Posted on 23rd February 2007 by Welshrogue in Book Review 2007,Books

 Book

A cowboy from Wyoming finds himself on a journey that lands him at a lighthouse on a tropical island.

This is one of the most enjoyable books I have ever read. It doesn’t have a lot of action, thrills, twists or anything other than a wonderful tale. This is the kind of story you would want to listen to while sat around a big fire on a beach somewhere warm. These are the adventures you wish you could experience.

The main characters, Tully Mars and Cleopatara Highbourne captivate the readers imagination and weave such a story. So many of the characters with smaller parts also demand attention and emotion, that by the end of the story you feel as if you have known then all for a long time.

This is a feel good story that does try to be anything other than a great tale. Unlike The Life Of Pi, which was an enjoyable read and excellently written, A Salty Piece Of Land, which also is an incredibly enjoyable read and just as well written, does make you think about the ending, or question what the author means. Head to Head, A Salty Piece Of Land is a more enjoyable, fufilling read than The Life Of Pi which just goes to show what a talented man Jimmy Buffett really is.

I am actually sad that the book is finished, it made me want to sit on the deck during a warm evening rather than huddle in the cold of winter.

This is not a classic story, it won’t be mentioned in 50 years time, but I don’t think I have smiled as much while reading a book as with this one. I totally, unabashedly loved it. and will re-read it again in a few months. Wow!

More making music….. Boo 3

Posted on 21st February 2007 by Welshrogue in Home Recording,Music,cakewalk,mp3

After my first two attempts of song writing, I thought I would try to do a different kind of tune, something that was more like the music that I tend to listen to and be inspired by. Its funny that I haven’t remixed this track simply because I don’t remember sound fonts I had used and haven’t
found any that could improve the sound. The sound levels are a little screwy as different tracks fade in and out. For a short tune, I do think I packed a lot into it and probably could redo the track with less dramatic fades and perhaps elongating it some more. Anyway, I like it and I guess that is the main thing.

100 Reasons Why I Love My Wife – Reason 42

Posted on 21st February 2007 by Welshrogue in 100 Reasons

The first time.

The first time I met my wife, in person, not on the phone, or online.

As you should when meeting someone from the internet for the first time, we met in a public place, with mutual friends about. We met on the platform of Maidstone train station. At the time I lived in Cardiff, so I had to catch a train for a two hour ride into London, cross London and catch a train to Maidstone. Surprise, surprise, I took a book to read. It was one I had read before but liked anyway, Alistair MacLean’s Fear Is The Key. I had difficulty reading it as my mind kept being distracted by what lay ahead. I can remember the train journey to Maidstone from London. I hadn’t travelled that way before so I spent a lot of the time looking out of the window seeing what was what. The train carriages were the old style ones with very springy seats that bounce you like a toddler on their
mother’s knee.

I was seriously nervous when I stepped off the train onto the platform. A quick glance up and down failed to spot anyone I should recognize, including this girl I had travelled to see. I would mention that I had travelled nearly three hours to see her but since she had travelled more than 3000 miles to see me, I won’t. At the exit of the platform she stood there. Looking younger than the picture I had seen of her, wearing an Adidas jacket and jeans, she wasn’t who I thought I was going to marry. Both nervous, we hugged, and then proceeded to walk around the town of Maidstone. At  some point we started holding hands, I don’t remember when but suddenly our hands were together.

I do remember the first kiss though. I kinda walked us off down a side street and then stopped, turned to her and we kissed. It wasn’t the greatest kiss we have ever shared but it definitely wasn’t the worst kiss I have ever had. A bit later once time had started moving again, we stopped off at a pub to grab a drink before meeting a mutual friend at the train station. I can remember the pint of Fosters I was drinking, and how much we were smiling and giggling.

We met with nothing garunteed other than a laugh, and yet it was the first time I met the person who would become my wife and mother of my two children. It definatly didn’t say that in my horoscope that morning but I am so glad we met.

Book Review – Fatherland – Robert Harris

Posted on 19th February 2007 by Welshrogue in Book Review 2007,Books

Book

In an alternative future, Germany won the second world war and is thriving, but when a policeman is called to a dead body, everything that the Fatherland has been built upon starts unraveling.

The story feels very similar to Gorky Park, in that the policeman is an outsider, a non conformist who does his own thing regardless. This is not to say that Fatherland is a rip-off of Gorky Park or visa versa. Both story’s have similarities but are totally different in structure and style. Fatherland imagines a Germany which not only won the second world war but built upon it to become greater than ever. Its very well put together and believable, not something that did happen but something that definitely could have.

Once started, Fatherland is a book that has to be finished as soon as possible. It is pretty much unputdownable! I loved this book!

Book Review – Storehouses of the snow – Edwin Woodard & Heather Woodard

Posted on 19th February 2007 by Welshrogue in Books

Book

Oh dear. I got three pages into this book before my good sense screamed loudly in my ear, forcing me to put it away until the dreaded day comes when I have nothing at all to read, there is nothing on the television and the internet has been shut down for maintenance. While the idea of the world tilting on its axis is nothing new, The Day The Earth Caught Fire, for instance, I don’t believe I have read such a badly written three pages since I was in school desperately trying to finish an essay.

Badly written is one thing, but the story went straight into the disaster almost without thinking. One moment the President gets a telex from a ship in the Antarctic saying the ice cap is melting and the next he is getting messages from around the world saying the tide is rising…… good way of building suspense… NOT!

I can’t even count this as a book that I have read, but if I ever find a wobbly table, I have the perfect place to put Storehouses of the Snow!

Britney Spears bald, as in shaves her head with Pictures……

Posted on 17th February 2007 by Welshrogue in Music,Rant,Stuff

How do you shave your head with pictures? Surely a razor would do a better job? Anyway, these can be found online at most of the usual locations….

I am surprised that people aren’t up in arms because she didn’t have her children with her. Tattoos are pretty commonplace nowadays, and to be honest, unless you are going to get a Mike Tyson-esque face tattoo, it shouldn’t be big news. Britney doesn’t appear to be drunk or high so that isn’t big news. Can it really be that the ‘big news’ here is that Britney shaved her head? What a sad world we live in if that is the most important news in the world today.

Maybe she is going to do a Sinead O’Conner tribute?

1153_con_sinead-o-connor-2.jpg

Or maybe she watched GI Jane and said I could do that…

austin_screens_film-2.gif

Or maybe Hugo Weaving broke into her home and force shaved her…..

natalie_portman.jpg

To be honest, who the hell cares why she did it, to be honest, I think Natalie Portman, Demi Moore, and Sinead O’Conner all look better bald than Britney Spears but thats just my opinion. Maybe it will start a new trend amongst celebrites….. anyone want to see Paris Hilton bald… oh wait, no thank you.
