Movie Review – Hoodwinked

movie

The true story of little red riding hood!

Another animated movie although this time, not from Pixar or Disney or anyone else famous. This is a very witty tale of what actually went down at Granny’s House when the wolf turned up. While pinching a little bit from various movies such as XXX and The Usual Suspects, Hoodwinked is very original with its plot and execution.

The amination is not as good as Pixar’s but because of the stylized characters, it doesn’t matter. It does feel like this movie was made for not a lot of money but it still rocks. The voice talent includes Anne Hathaway, Glenn Close, Jim Belushi, Andy Dick and the great and wonderful David Ogden Stiers.

Early in the movie it becomes obvious who the bad guy is but it doesn’t affect the movie at all. Its clever style and action keeps the movie running with good pace.

A very enjoyable movie, and when taking into account how much this movie probably cost to make, a great movie indeed! Did I mention the crazy squirrel?

Movie Review – Talladega Nights: The ballad of Ricky Bobby

movie

The story of one of the greatest Nascar drivers and his climb to the top. It also covers his fall down the other side……

A Will Ferrell vehicle (joke!) about the crazy world of driving fast. Partnered with his best buddy, played by John C Reilly, Ricky Bobby is determined to win everything he can.

This is a very funny movie, but not always for the right reasons and not always that funny. More than a couple of times there seemed to be a scene that, well, just wasn’t as funny as it should have been and a couple of scenes that just didn’t do anything at all for me. Yes, Will Ferrell is funny but his persona as Ricky Bobby was determined to win and that was it. I found myself laughing at him rather than with him, and he lacked redemable characteristics that a lead character usually needs.

I really did enjoy the movie but afterwards found myself wondering why. Some strong scenes don’t make up for the moments that are just awkward to watch.

Declassified and Confidential – The way of the future

View From Behind The Couch

One of the great things about DVD`s is that they often contain extra`s such as a gag reel, and behind the scenes featurettes. I for one enjoy seeing how the movie was made, and hearing the various cast members give their opinions on many different things. Pirates of the Caribean: Dead Mans Chest for instance has hours and hours of the stuff. It gives added value to a movie that perhaps wasn`t that great but still you want to own it.

The BBC and Russell T Davies in their infinite widsom have come up with something similar for their Doctor Who & Torchwood series. After each new Doctor Who episode there is a Doctor Who Confidential which lets the writers, the actors and other members of the crew take you inside the filming of that episode. With Torchwood, its Torchwood Declassified, and the same applies with cast and crew all chipping in with opinions and little nuggets of knowledge that the geek, I mean fan really wants to know.

How this can transfer to other shows I am not too sure. The BBC is lucky to have several channels where they can show the main episode on one channel and then on another channel afterwards show the behind the scenes show. In North America it would have to be one channel showing the series and then straight afterwards showing the behind the scenes episode.

I hope that other producers, and writers take up the challenge thrown down by the Beeb and Russell T Davies and come up with their own ways of giving the viewers some behind the scenes access for other series.

Movie Review – Ice Age: The Meltdown

movie

In the sequel to Ice Age, the three friends find themselves under threat, not from the ice but from the ice melting. They must journey, helping those they find and try to escape before the ice melts.

The three main stars for the first movie, Ray Romano as the mammoth, John Leguizamo as the sloth and Denis Leary as the saber tooth tiger are all back, but this time they have some more friends.  Seann William Scott, Queen Latifah and even Jay Leno make an appearance.

Once again the animation is first class with lots of furry creatures all filling up the screen, perhaps none so much as the crazy squirrel whose appearances are almost like commercial breaks, separate from the main plot of the movie and yet side splittingly funny.

Ice Age: The Meltdown is a brilliant movie, a good followup to the first one and yet it doesn`t repeat itself in the plot which is nice. Lots of fun!

Movie Review – Cars

movie

A brash Nascar car gets lost on the way to a three car showdown and finds himself on Route 66, in a forgotten town. Will he get back to the big race?

Pixar does it again, with great animation and some stellar names in the cast, well, Paul Newman anyway. The lead car is voiced by Owen Wilson, and various other cars have such talent as Larry the Cable Guy, Tony Shalhoub, George Carlin and Cheech Marin.

This is a fun movie, with lots of clever humour, some emotion and some of the best graphics I have seen so far from Pixar. Several big names from Nascar pop their voices into the movie including Dale Earnhardt Jr.

A movie for all ages but perhaps more for the children than adults.
