View From Behind The Couch

Since this is episode 1 and everything is new, then everything can be considered a spoiler, continue at your own risk.

<SPOILER>

WPC Gwen Cooper is called to a murder scene just as it is closed off so the members of Torchwood can take over. She sees what they do and decides to track down and find out more about the mysterious Torchwood.

This is the first episode of the spin off from Doctor Who so consider it an episode to introduce the main characters and set the scene for the following episodes. You only get one alien/creature, a little alien tech and a lot of explanations about Torchwood.

The main characters are WPC Gwen Cooper obviously as the one through who we discover Torchwood. The Torchwood team consists of Suzie Costello, Ianto, Doctor Toshiko Sato, Doctor Own Harper and their leader, Captin Jack Harkness.

They work from the Torchwood Hub, underneath the city of Cardiff, Wales. The Hub is built on a rift in time and space that runs through Cardiff. We also discover that Torchwood is an organization that is above the law, without control from anyone outside of it.

As Gwen finds out, Torchwood deals with aliens, artifacts left by the aliens, and anything else that falls under the category of strange.

Think of the X files meets This life and you will have a good idea of what Torchwood is all about. Set out as an adult science fiction show, the first episode provides hints of where the series will go with swearing, sex and alien tech. This isn’t your father’s Doctor Who by any means.

Torchwood feels modern and definately different from any other science fiction show out there. Definatly a show that is going to get a big following.

Another attempt of music making

Posted in Guitar, Home Recording, Music, cakewalk, mp3 on January 30, 2007 by welshrogue

One day, in my fantasy world that is, I will be interviewed about my musical influences. I’ll name Tangergine Dream, Moby, Jan Hammer and many other synth based musicians as my main sources of inspiration. This isn’t entirely true as any music I listen to inspires me. Right now, ‘You make loving fun’ by Fleetwood Mac is on the radio and there are parts of that song I would love to imitate in the future in one of my tunes. I love Def Leppard, Van Halen and other such guitar rock bands yet my own skill with the six string is such that when it comes to making music, its easier to use a keyboard (and mouse)

I find that I can start with a little peice of a tune and build on it until it has become this great big ‘thing’. This tune is a good example of it. I came up with the repeating pattern first on the guitar and then away I went. It has a guitar solo that I actually played (badly but still) and almost a verse/chorus pattern. When I re-mixed it, I through in some more guitars and changed the bass a little. It seemed to work better.

My life gets extra geeky!

Yesterday I put together my brand spanking (there we go again with the spanking thing, is it wrong to spank something that isn’t new?) computer and discovered that yet again, unforeseen by me, I am going down the road of extra geekiness. Why? Because my new computer looks like the Torchwood SUV! You be the judge!

100 reasons why I love my wife – Reason 41

Posted in 100 Reasons on January 25, 2007 by welshrogue

My wife is confident in her sexual prowess!

What can I say? My wife reads what I write and doesn’t worry that a post like the one below this one is anything other than me talking out of my hat. You see, or rather hear a lot of women who seem to think that they are great in bed and will tell any and everyone whenever they can. If someone leaves them, you’ll here them say that they are walking away from the best (insert sexual act or body part here) they’ll ever find.

My wife doesn’t have to boast about it, and there is no way I would walk away from her (insert sexual act or body part here, here, and then by here). She knows that she totally rocks my boat and thats good enough for her, and me :)

Blowing the guide..

Posted in sex on January 25, 2007 by welshrogue

In a previous post I commented on a couple of websites that had written ‘How To’ articles on the art of blow jobs. The articles were very well written and an enjoyable read but they started me thinking. How does a woman know if the blow job she is giving is a good one or if the man is just paying lip service (so to speak) to the deed?

Given the fact that men generally will do or say anything to get sex, and given the fact that unless the woman is wearing braces and using a little too much teeth, a man is not going to complain about the service, how does a woman know if she is doing a good job? Apart from the end result of a mouthful, anything a man does during the act could be for a multitude of reasons.

For example:

The man groans and moans – too much teeth or his team just let in a goal

The mans body started moving back and forth – back hair starting to itch

The man proclaims to the world that this is the best blow job ever – it truly might be, or perhaps he is just giving encouragement

You see, a guide to blow jobs written by a woman is like a man explaining exactly what it feels like to give birth. Men can read all the books, watch it live, ask questions but at the end of the day, men don’t have to put anything out of their ying yang!

But wait, I hear you ask, why would a man let a woman carry on giving a blow job if the aforementioned job is not that good? Several reasons. Hope springs eternal and therefore the man is hoping that the woman gets better through practice. Another reason is that if you are in a desert and dying of thirst you don’t complain if the water you are given by a kind passing stranger is slighty warm with a funny after taste!

I have commented on other people’s guide for technique and it isn’t fair unless I give you my guide on doing the best that you can.

Its quite simple.

Just do it!

After all, something’s better than nothing! And hopefully it will be over before the game restarts! ;)

Book Review – Prayers For The Assassin – Robert Ferrigno

Posted in Book Review 2007 on January 24, 2007 by welshrogue

Book

In the near future, America has become the Islamic Republic of America. New York, Washington and Mecca redioactive death zones, destroyed by nuclear bombs planted by men claiming to be Mossad. A historian uncovers information that questions their claims and and the nation that was built upon it.

Prayers for the Assassin is a very different book. On one hand it is a brilliant thriller, a hunt between an assassin and his prey, a search for the truth, a tale of standing up and doing the right thing. On the other, it is a story about a potential future where everything about America had turned on its head. Muslim law rules the land, secret police enforce the law with swift and often harsh treatment.

This is an utter page turner, a book that intrigues, informs about the Islamic religion and captivates the reader with its portrayal of the future. Looking forward to the sequel.

Boo 1 – my second attempt at tune writing

Posted in Guitar, Home Recording, Music, cakewalk, mp3 on January 24, 2007 by welshrogue

I can’t say the first attempt as that track is lost in the distant past of my teenage years. The second attempt was made with Cakewalk and a lot of soundfonts.

Soundfonts are similar to normal computer fonts, the obvious different being that rather than changing how letters appear, they change the tone and timbre of notes created on the computer. While I haven’t looked for new soundfonts for sometime, there were plenty available for free when I did last update my collection. They can range from a very basic tone to multiple sampled drum sets. Some of the soundfonts are ultra realistic whilst others are perhaps not so professional. You need good sized memory to fully utilize soundfonts as they are loaded into memory before use.

The guitar solo at the start of the track was written by hand, and when I say hand I mean mouse as I was unable to actually play the solo. I used a guitar to slowly, and boy do I mean slowly work out the notes which I then put into the track one note at a time.

I like the changes the track goes through, although I have ‘remixed’ it since and added a lot more to the second half as well as replacing or updating much of it.

This is the original track

Music is the reason I got into computers……..

When I were just a lad, there was a show on TV that I now vaguely remember to be titled something like Rock School or Rock Steady or something where some musicans explained all about making music. Not the dry and dusty way of reading music, knowing theory and so forth but actual music. I don’t remember too much about it other than the woman bass player was definatly more butch than the male drummer and in one episode they explained how by playing guitar connected to this magical cable you could control the sound coming out of the keyboard. Yep, this was my introduction to midi!

For those of you in the know, you already understand what midi stands for. Peace, justice and the American way……. nope, it actually stands for Musical Instrument Digital Interface. When you play a midi controller, be it a guitar, keyboard, drums, or even a violin, with the right hardware you can produce sounds not normally found on your instrument of choice. You could play guitar and the sound playing would be an organ. Why you would want your guitar to sound like a kidney is beyond me but there you go.

A famous example of the use of midi is Rick Allen, the one armed drummer of Def Leppard who used a midi based drum kit when he first began playing drums again after his accident.

Anyway, back at the ranch. The thought of midi and of using a computer to record the music which could then be played back, as many times as you wanted, perfect everytime just blew my mind.

The first computer I had that could do this for me was a Sinclair Spectrum, which once I figured out what I was doing controlled a little midi capable Casio CZ100 keyboard and a drum machine. No matter that the music had to be hand coded as a single line per note, it was worth it. I still remember the song I recorded. ‘I saw her standing there’, the Beatles classic sounded great, but nothing like the original! I was hooked.

Through various computers, software and instruments, I have tried to do more with midi and later on, with digital audio recording. I have actually written several tunes using a PC, Cakewalk and some plugins, which I will post as and when I find the time. I truly enjoy writing music, which is funny considering I dropped music while in school. I own several guitars but my playing level is pretty much inbetween crappy and useless. I can’t play piano or keyboards but I can use a mouse to place the notes where I want them. In a way, home recording helps me be the musician I always wanted to be.

Why am I telling you all this? Because hopefully by the end of the week, I should have a brand spanking new (why do you only get spanked when you are new?) hand built computer that will be able to handle any and all things I want to do when recording. Multiple ins and outs, a processor that won’t die if I play three tracks of audio at the same time and enough memory that can hold all the settings and samples I need. I can’t wait. I might even write some new stuff!

I think I need an outlet for sex!!

Posted in sex on January 22, 2007 by welshrogue

Being the type of person I am, I tend to want to write a lot. I don’t because a lot of what I want to write isn’t worth reading. Does anyone really need to know my thoughts on which side of toilet paper to use? And I am sure no one else cares that I finally got my tail light fixed on my car after several years of tape.

Sex on the other hand tends to attract a lot of attention as everyone likes to read about it. But I can’t write about it, not as me anyway. This blog is an everyday blog that anyone from my wife to my friends, even to my parents should be able to read without worry. Sort of a PG version of my life, no graphic details of this mornings bowel movement and no pictures taken at the time. It also means that my thoughts, and being a man, I have many, on sex, the nature of sex, and exactly how kinky my life really isn’t tend to be kept in a very small dark place in the back of my head and not get let out no matter how much they scream!

The internet is responsible for opening up people’s minds to sex, and differing forms of such things. It encourages people to write about their feelings, wants, lusts, their past conquests and even post images. It allows people who may not be able to express themselves in their everyday life to sit back, relax and let it all out.  The more you read, generally the more knowledge you gain. Obviously not everything you read is true, but some of the imagery is still fun to think about ;)

I am humming and ahhhing about perhaps doing a secret blog, a unlinked blog where I an say what I want to say, and let interested people into the rollercoaster ride that is my dark side. It might be something I regret but I if I do this, it will be unconnected with this blog and therefore shouldn’t reflect on the pureness of me……. I dunno.
