Criminal Christmas # 18 – Starsky & Hutch

Posted on 18th December 2006 by Welshrogue in Criminal Christmas,Movies

The movie remake of the much loved TV show of the 70s teams up two cops with different styles teaming up to take down a bad man.

Set in the 1970′s, S & H is  as much a tribute to the original series and stars as it is an original movie. Perfectly cast as the main characters, Ben Stiller as Starsky, Owen Wilson as Hutch along with probably the greatest bit of casting ever, Snoop Dogg as Huggy Bear, the movie looks like the TV show. The main characters look like their small screen counterparts and there are several moments that give a nod to the originals.

As a movie its more fun if you were a fan of the original rather than watching this afresh. It is funny, there are some great moments but it isn’t really a classic. If truth be told, it only becomes a good movie if you understand the in jokes and nods to the original show.

USA

It has been reported that Miss USA, Tara Conner has been seen about town in New York City “lustily kissing” Miss Teen USA Katie Blair. Now I have no problem at all with misbehaving beauty queens. If I was single, my video collection would heavily feature misbehaving beauty queens.

Criminal Christmas # 17 – Con Air

Posted on 17th December 2006 by Welshrogue in Criminal Christmas,Movies

An ex-Ranger, released for parole after killing a man while protecting his wife finds himself on a plane with various dangerous criminals, which in hindsight was probably not the best idea someone has ever had.

Nicholas Cage yet again stars in a Jerry Bruckheimer action movie, and yet again with a great supporting cast including John Malkovich as the mastermind criminal Cyrus ‘The Virus” Grissom, Steve Buscemi as Garland ‘The Marietta Mangler’ Greene and John Cusack as the US Marshall Vince Larkin.

The plot is predicatable with the action spaced out between some fun scenes. Every scene with Buscemi as the Lector-esque Greene is enjoyable as he comes over as a normal sort of serial killer. Buscemi competes with Malkovich for the most overacting criminal.

Con air is also the source of one of my all time WTF’s…… more of which can be found here .

All in all, Con Air gives the viewer what they expect when they buy the tickets. Its a good looking movie with plenty of action, not too much in the way of challenging dialogue and some instantly recognizable movie stars. A good way to spend two hours.

100 reasons why I love my wife – Reason 37

Posted on 16th December 2006 by Welshrogue in 100 Reasons

My wife doesn’t stand for any rubbish.

No, not rubbish such as ” I am sorry honey, that has never happened before. Let me clean that up and we can try again in a few hours” but rather, garbage!!

Our city, as in most, has a recycling service, or blue box. This allows us to seperate glass, plastic, paper and place them out seperately. This is good for the enironvment and also means a little less normal trash. The provider of this recycling services has decided that rather than placing all items into a blue box every two weeks, house owners now has to seperate each type of rubbish. Tying up paper in twine, washing and taking off the labels of food cans, keeping the glass seperate. There is a large to-do about this in our city for several reasons.

My wife, that quiet, unassuming woman of mine wrote a letter to the editor of our local tome asking if there were organizations or groups that collected certain types of recycling for charity. The answers have been pinging her mailbox since the letter was posted with resounding yes’s!

You see, my wife’s logic is this. If she is going to go the extra step of seperating the garbage, then she should be able to donate or give it to whoever she wants, whenever she wants, and not just the organized pickup every two weeks. In our house, with very little storage space for such items, the garbage would either be put out on the deck to be attacked by the local wildlife, or somewhere in the house where the inside wildlife, or our children as others call them, can get them.

If you think about it, its a simple choice. Do the work that the garbage company used to do, causing us more problems than solving, or do the work and then give it to a charity through a group of do gooders. Its nice to be able to give to charity because its not always possible to give when asked, but this way, we can always be giving!

Criminal Christmas # 16 – A Time To Kill

Posted on 16th December 2006 by Welshrogue in Criminal Christmas,Movies

A 10 year old black girl is viciously raped but when the father kills the two accused men, a white lawyer defends the man against a rising KKK and racial tension in the deep south.

Based on the book of the same name by John Grisham, A Time To Kill is a breath taking story of the court room battle set against the backdrop of racial violence and pressure. The book is brilliant, with moments that are sickening, thrilling, humourous and enjoyable.

The movie is a pretty straight transfer of the story from the book, and as such works wonderfully. The main characters are superbly cast with Matthew McConaughey, Sandra Bullock, Samuel L. Jackson, Oliver Platt, Donald Sutherland, Kiefer Sutherland & Ashley Judd all perfectly cast. You don’t disbelieve anything that you are seeing and that is important as the emotions are cranked up higher and higher by the climax of the movie.

In my honest, yet humble opinion, there have only ever been two perfect adaptations of books to movies. Both are racial drama’s set in courtrooms. One is To Kill A Mockingbird, the other is A Time To Kill. This is a movie that you must watch, no matter how some of the subject matter might make you feel, you owe it to yourself to experience it all.

Criminal Christmas # 15 – Ronin

Posted on 15th December 2006 by Welshrogue in Criminal Christmas,Movies

In the murky world that is populated by people with questionable backgrounds, a group of professionals is put together to attain a case, which it seems, is wanted by various groups. It appears that not everyone is working to the same game plan.

Ronin is a very stylish thriller that creates a dark network below the every day world that most people see. Ex- agents from various intelligent agencies are thrown together and have to chase down the mysterious case that is in the hands of some ex- KGB folk. One of the highlights of this movie is the car chases which are ultra realistic, with the actors in the car driving as the cars screech around corners.

Ronin is a movie that wouldn’t have worked if the actors had been the usual handsome shiny Hollywood actors, so luckily, the cast is made up of real actors. Robert De Niro, Jean Reno, Sean Bean, Jonathan Pryce all bring their A game to the show adding to the already realistic feel.

This is a great movie, dark and stylish but with a lot of content and some great action scenes.

100 reasons why I love my wife – Reason 35

Posted on 14th December 2006 by Welshrogue in 100 Reasons

My wife likes to pretend she is a nurse.

Now if she did want to dress up all nursey like and administer a bed bath or something as pleasurable then I obviously wouldn’t be complaining but sadly, thats not what I mean.

My wife looks after me when I am ill. Having had some sort of gastro explosion this week and having spent most of a night sat on the toilet puking and wondering how can stuff come out of both ends at once, my wife let me sleep in, something I never do, and then bought all sorts of medicines and supplies to keep me alive until I had my strength back, or at least until the room stopped spinning and my stomach stopped grumbling.

She does this without complaint, which I am afraid is more than I would do. You see, although it may be a surprise to you, I can be a bit of a bastard!

Now I just have to find a nurses uniform for my wife to wear when she is wiping my brow….
