Sci Fi September # 22 – Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow

Giant flying robots terrorize New York City as famous scientists from around the world disappear. A pilot reluctantly teams up with a newspaper reporter to find out what is happening.

Set in an alternate 1930′s, Sky Captain is a highly stylized movie that features ray guns, robots and flying machines. What sci fi fan would not enjoy this? With the special effects making it look aged, Sky Captain really captures the feeling that the 1930′s adventure serials had. One almost expects a cliff hanger ending the way the whole movie feels.

Starring Jude Law, Gwyneth Paltrow, Giovanni Ribisi and Angelina Jolie, Sky Captain is a futuristic 1930′s. The technology isn’t computers and lasers, but they still have amazing things created using the technology of the day.

The one liners and the banter between Law and Paltrow keeps the movie going during those quiet moments where there isn’t much action. When you watch the movie its hard to remember that 99 percent of it was filmed against a green screen.

This is a true adventure movie, doffing its cap to those serials of the 20s and 30s, updating it slightly and giving it a great feel.

100 reasons why I love my wife – Reason 6

My wife is my bad influence.

As already mentioned many times before, I am somewhat of a book-a-holic. I buy books left, right and center. I read them all, even if it takes a few months to get through them all. It feels like an addiction when I have a book waiting to be read, I have to get to it and devour it as soon as I can so I can get more books to fill the void.

I have heard of these places called a ‘library’ but the only time I visit them is when they have book sales. Yep, I have it bad.

So what does my loving wife do? Whenever we pass a book shop that just happens to have a buy 3 get the 4th free sale, she all but pushes me down the aisles so that I can look for a couple more books for my ever growing collection. My wife is not exactly acting selflessly as she does often read the same books that I purchase, just not at the same rate that I seem to do.

At the moment, I have perhaps 40 books waiting to be read, not including the 4 or 5 recent ones I just purchased, or the other 4 or 5 that I will be buying before the end of the month. Like I said, my wife is a bad influence.
