Sci Fi September # 19 – Sphere

A spacecraft is found at the bottom of the sea and a group of scientists are sent to discover who or what flew it. Their discoveries are disturbing to say the least.

Based on the novel by Michael Crichton, Sphere stars Dustin Hoffman, Sharon Stone and Samuel L Jackson as the aforementioned scientists who along with some others go under water to look at the space ship.

The plot is pretty close to the book, which unfortunately is a good book until the silly ending, which the movie includes although with a twist that perhaps is even sillier than the book.

Its a good movie, similar to Event Horizon in plot but the characters seem to be stereotypes of their parts. Special effects aren’t bad, but perhaps not the greatest.

This is a good movie for the most part, but if you don’t like to be disappointed with the ending, don’t watch this.

Book Review – Life of Pi – Yann Martel

A young Indian boy finds himself on a lifeboat in the pacific along with several animals, one of which is a Bengal tiger.

This is a very different story to any that I have ever read before. The main character, Pi, is humorous, knowledgeable, funny and instantly likable. The story flows like the smoothest chocolate and is truly a joy to indulge. The plot is pretty much in two parts, one is the build up to the sinking of the ship and the other is what happens after that. Both are written wonderfully with a great style that lends itself to easy reading.

This is a book that is a one of a kind. You smile while it makes you think of the serious issues it offers. This is a book that you should read so that you can enjoy your day a little bit more.
