Sci Fi September # 16 – The Abyss
The search for a missing nuclear submarine utilizes an undersea deep sea drilling platform and the workers on it. Things begin to unravel with the arrival of a team of seals and perhaps another visitor.
James Cameron writes and directs this underwater science fiction movie. Cameron regular Michael Biehn is the Seal Lt. with Ed Harris playing the drilling platform boss and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio the platforms designer.
The set is a tight closed-in environment that looks very realistic. It looks crappy, beaten up and well worn. The underwater scenes are also convincing. The special effects are what sells this movie more than anything else. They look brilliant and other than the obvious use of miniatures now and again, everything is believable.
The plot is the usual Cameron fare of conflict, discovery and grand finale. Its a good movie to watch, something to pass a few hours on a rainy day.
