Sci Fi September # 15 – The Last Starfighter

A kid living in a trailer park spends hours playing a video game, only to find out that the video game is an audition for something a lot more real.

Lance Guest stars as the kid, doomed to spend the rest of his life working in the trailer park he lives in until a stranger makes him an offer he finds hard to refuse. The offer comes from Centauri, played by the wonderful Robert Preston who is as charismatic in this as he was in The Music Man 22 years earlier. Every scene that Preston is in, becomes his scene.

While the plot is slightly outrageous, the special effects in space are pretty snazzy, especially considering the year (1984). While the graphics do look dated, they still look good, especially the Gunstar.

This is a fun movie, doesn’t take itself too seriously (just look at any scene with the Beta Unit), and at the end, its a movie worth seeing for the smile you’ll have on your face when the credits roll.

100 reasons why I love my wife – Reason 3

My wife is my rock.

I don’t mean she stars in action movies that aren’t very good or she asks if I can smell what she is cooking. Neither do I mean that she is mossy, craggy or rolls.

There are times when I feel despondent, confused, upset and pretty well messed up. They occur more often that I would like to admit. I am certain that I have some major issues that, in a perfect world, would and could be resolved by professional help, or at least electric shock therapy. There are days when the bottom of my world falls out, and I am holding on by one hand, holding everything I know in the other, and suddenly I have itchy balls. My wife is there to scratch my balls while helping me back up into the world. I admit that last line is a little graphic but I am talking metaphorically.

I hope that there are days when I am the strong one but in my relationship with my wife, I think my wife is called upon more often to be the one with the big shoulders (but not like in the 80s), and the common sense to make me realise that whatever drama is occurring is nothing that I should be upset about.

Without my wife, I wouldn’t have grown as a person nearly as much as I have in the last 8 years. She has really inspired me to be a better person, which believe you me, there is a lot of room for improvement.

Ford copying designs?

The Ford motor company is losing money hand over fist, they are closing factories around North America, but luckily not my local Ford plant. They have announced that the Ford plant in Oakville will be making the vehicle based on the Ford Fairlane concept.

I looked up the Ford Fairlane concept and thought I was looking at a Range Rover. You decide:

Does Size Really Matter?

I have pondered this age old question for some time but I have finally discovered the answer, which of course, I will share with you.

Up to last week, I believed that I had an averaged sized one, not as big as some you see in movies but no so small as to be no use to anyone. It was average. I didn’t have any complaints about it, it was good enough for what I was doing with it. My wife didn’t seem to mind either and to be honest, her happiness is paramount to me.

When I was much younger, I had a smaller one, but being young, I was thankful to have one at all. It always seemed to be in use, which I guess is what happens when you are young. Some of the best times was early in the morning on a weekend, just me lying in bed and my small one. A great way to start the day.

Last week I started wondering about trying to get a bigger one, my wife had mentioned it, and as most married men know, a passing comment from your wife is the same as an order from your boss. We went to a place known to supply bigger ones to men and looked at some of the examples they displayed. I know this isn’t an area that you should ever skimp on but we chose a special deal that was on offer that day. An offer that would double the size. I admit to getting giddy at the thought of something that big and how happy my wife would be with it. If I was lucky, she wouldn’t be able to keep her hands off it, wanting to enjoy it as much as possible.

Well, just over a week has passed and the big one is here. It is big. Huge infact, and I worry that perhaps it is too large for my wife to handle. I don’t know if she will be able to get used to the size but there is no way I am going back to the smaller size now. It seems to be able to do everything advertised as well as a couple of new things. I am very impressed with it and have had trouble not talking about it.

I love my TV!
