Sci Fi September # 15 – The Last Starfighter
A kid living in a trailer park spends hours playing a video game, only to find out that the video game is an audition for something a lot more real.
Lance Guest stars as the kid, doomed to spend the rest of his life working in the trailer park he lives in until a stranger makes him an offer he finds hard to refuse. The offer comes from Centauri, played by the wonderful Robert Preston who is as charismatic in this as he was in The Music Man 22 years earlier. Every scene that Preston is in, becomes his scene.
While the plot is slightly outrageous, the special effects in space are pretty snazzy, especially considering the year (1984). While the graphics do look dated, they still look good, especially the Gunstar.
This is a fun movie, doesn’t take itself too seriously (just look at any scene with the Beta Unit), and at the end, its a movie worth seeing for the smile you’ll have on your face when the credits roll.
