Sci Fi September # 14 – The Day The Earth Stood Still
A flying saucer lands in Washington D.C. and its pilot, along with a 7 foot robot, emerge to a stunned world. What started as a mission of peace potentially turns deadly as the alien’s intentions are misinterpreted.
Probably one of the most important science fiction movies of the 50s if not the 20th century. Its cautionary tale of world peace captured the imagination of movie going fans everywhere. Directed by Robert Wise, who would later go on to direct Star Trek The Motion Picture, the movie moves along without a wasted scene. Michael Rennie as Klaatu is great as the calm visitor with Patricia Neal looking beautiful.
This is not a movie with lots of action, but more a tale with intelligence and style. The films message still holds well today although the world has changed a lot in the 55 years since its release.
If you are looking to enjoy science fiction movies, then The Day The Earth Stood Still should be required viewing.
