Sci Fi September # 12 – Alien

A deep space mining ship receives a transmission and the crew are sent to investigate. What they find is not a good thing.

In space, no one can hear you scream. If you are sitting next to me, you will hear scream!

I can remember the first time I watch Alien, it scared the crap out of me. It still does. For a movie made in 1979, it still stands up. A spectacular movie to watch, it incorporates H.R. Giger’s designs to great effect. For the scenes inside the Nostromo, the insides of the ship were built on one stage so that the cast could walk around it as if it was a real ship. This make the movie feel claustrophobic and intensifies the fear as the Alien rampages through the craft.

Starring Sigourney Weaver in her first big role, along with Tom Skerritt, John Hurt, and Ian Holm, Alien is essentially a remake of The Thing from Another World, but set in space. The humans trapped in a confined area as something big goes around killing. Just two years after Star Wars was released Alien should the movie going public the grimy side of space travel. The Nostromo is dirty and worn down, as if it had really spent years in space. The whole look of the movie inspired a slew of movies that looked realistic instead of the fanciful clean look of movies such as Star Trek.

This is still a great movie, and still a movie I try to avoid as it scares me!

100 reasons why I love my wife – Reason 2

My wife is my co-pilot/navigator/passenger

I am a very immature 36 yr old. I still enjoy playing video games on a playstation. My wife, who is younger than me, enjoys watching, but more than that. she enjoys helping me.

Take a first person shooter such as Unreal Tournament or Quake. While I am moving around, looking everywhere for something to kill, my wife watches my health, keeps an eye out for someone I might have missed who will kill me. She also enjoys watching me frag myself.

Adventure games such as Dark Cloud allow our partnership to improve as my wife tells me where to go and what to do, and I do it without complaint. This is obviously not the same in real life, where I am told where to go and what to do, and after a pout, I do it without complaint.

Finally, put me in the driving seat of Gran Tourismo 4 and I become a lunatic behind the wheel, as compared to real life when I am, well never mind. My wife tells me when to turn, if I need to get gas or new tires, when I should be braking and what line to take. This frees me up to simply put my foot down and try to remember to change gear when the engine makes that high pitched whine.

Yes, I would play video games by myself and still enjoy it but with my wife as the co-pilot, the experience is just so much more fun.
