100 reasons why I love my wife – Reason 1
My wife doesn’t blame me for messing up.
We have gotten to the point in our lives where we are too old to understand how to use a VCR. It flashes 12:00 all the time and to be honest, its a little old and crappy. So in our infinite wisdom we decided to look into getting a PVR (or personal video recorder). We already own our satellite system so we were looking to buy a compatible PVR.
The bottom of the range PVR is so basic that you cannot watch anything else if you are recording a TV program. So we looked at the top of the range (its a small range, so small that the deer and the antelope don’t so much wander as mingle). It has everything that we were looking for, but for the same price, we could get a HD PVR which had more recording space. Rather than buying we will rent the system, it will be a lot cheaper, its covered for malfunctions, and its free installation. Made sense to me.
This was at the start of last week, on Friday I was speaking to my dad, something I tend to do quite a lot. I mentioned that we were getting this HD PVR and its so great etc. He asked a simple question of his simple son. Does the wonderful HD PVR connect to the no so wonderful, and lets face it old television that we intend use.
There was a pause, then a little more of a pause after which I paused.
Needless to say I ran downstairs, and began the research to see if indeed it would work or if it wouldn’t. This is predictable but you guessed it, it won’t connect. I blame my old age as my increasingly common mistakes. Either that of the lack of sleep over the last two and a half years.
I explained to my wife that evening that we would have to try and organise a different PVR and my wonderful, intelligent, sexy, and cool wife said, ‘or we could just buy a HD TV’.
The TV arrives on Thursday.
Sci Fi September # 11 – When Worlds Collide
The Earth is doomed by a planet traveling through our solar system, coming close enough to wipe out all living things on our world. A group of scientists try to find a way to leave the Earth and hopefully land on this new planet.
This is a movie that is more entertainment than accurate science. This doesn’t stop it from being a lot of fun though. Made in 1951, it is a dramatic telling of what humanity would have to deal with if faced by the end of the world. The special effects are, not bad in the main, although there are one or two telling moments towards the end of the movie.
Starring Richard Derr, Barbara Rush, Peter Hansen, and John Hoyt, When World Collide has the sense of panic as they try to construct a rocket ship to leave the Earth. The plot is the movie’s strong point, with drama around every turn.
Even with all its faults, I love When Worlds Collide, a movie that is slated to be remade in the next year or so.
