Sci Fi September # 6 – Galaxy Quest
The crew of a cult space TV show that was canceled years ago find themselves visiting their roles again, but this time, its real.
OK, let me just point out the obvious, this is a spoof of Star Trek. It has all the ingredients of the classic show, a captain who gets to sleep with all aliens but who is despised by the rest of the crew. A science officer who has no emotions. This is not a bad thing. In fact because the stereotypes have already been created, the movie doesn’t need to spend time introducing them. We, the viewers, just jump right in and we know whats going on. Right down to un-named extra who appears at the start of the show but no one expects to survive until the end. This is such a brilliant idea that I am surprise no one thought of it earlier.
GQ stars some big names to go along with the big ideas. Tim Allen plays the actor playing the captain. Alan Rickman plays the actor playing the half human/half alien science officer. Sigourney Weaver, complete with blonde hair and incredible growing chest, plays the actress playing Gwen DeMarco whose job it is to repeat everything that the computer says. The cast is rounded out by Tony Shalhoub, Daryl Mitchell, Sam Rockwell and Missi Pyle who looks kinda hot of an alien in a very strange way.
The plot, ah the plot. After a fan meet, the cast of the long defunct Galaxy Quest tv show find themselves signed up for a new role, as the crew on a real spacecraft as well meaning aliens, who believe that Galaxy Quest was actually a documentary rather than entertainment, beg for help to avoid their destruction by the evil spirited and crab headed Sarris.
There are so many nods to Star Trek that the movie stands up to three or four views so that the watcher can spot them all. The effects are wonderful and the creatures/monsters are so much fun, it makes you wonder if they could have their own TV show.
While there is a small amount of drama, as in, will they all die or not, the main thing is the humour and it is well done. Some science fiction movies make you laugh because they are truly bad, some because the special effects look like they were done on a budget of 100 dollars and some spray paint. Galaxy Quest makes you laugh because it pokes fun at all that is holy with Star Trek. It makes fun yet still respects it. This is a great funny sci fi movie.
