Sci Fi September # 3 – Contact
A young astronomer looks for signals from out of space, but when she finds one, things don’t go as expected.
Based on a book by Carl Sagen, Contact stars Jodie Foster in a movie about hope, and searching for something. This is a science fiction story with the emphasis on science. The Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) which is a real organization, is the setting for Jodie Fosters astronomers search. It is a good setting, as the beginning of Independence Day demonstrates.
The start of the movie moves from Earth through the solar system and does a great job of putting Earth in its place in the universe. We are very very very small.
Contact also stars Tom Skerritt, Matthew McConaughey and William Fichtner but there are a lot of cameos by people such as Larry King, Geraldo Rivera, Jay Leno and even Bill Clinton.
Story wise, its a long movie, over two hours long and at times it tends to drag a bit which is a same as it is a good movie. The last hour or so picks up but then the special effects let it down. If you take your Sci Fi with more science than fiction, this may be for you!
