Rant of the Day – DVD Packaging

<RANT>

I just bought a couple of DVD’s, V for Vendetta special edition and Batman Begins. I buy DVD’s even though I know I can download them for free. I buy DVD’s even though I know they are not High Def or not Oscar winners. I buy DVD’s because some movies you have to own.

I don’t buy DVD’s so I can spend 15 frustrated minutes trying to open the cases. I can understand that like most things bought today, DVD’s need to be wrapped in cellophane, I can understand that, honestly. But why does it also need 3 stickers over each open edge? Incase the DVD tries to make a break for it? Incase someone shoplifts the DVD, takes it home, takes out the DVD, copies it, and then puts it back in the case, and somehow magically puts the cellophane back on it, and then returns it to the store for a credit?

Is it because the movie is so good, that the movie companies, the DVD companies and the shops have all got together to find a way to protect these valuable discs? Well until they throw them into the discount bin.

I finally get into the DVD, start playing it and the first thing you see is a warning from the FBI saying you mustn’t copy the DVD. Copy the DVD? Why should other people be saved from the frustration of trying to open the DVD case? I think they should all suffer.

Its the same with gay marriages. Apart from the fact that if marriage was such a sancrity there wouldn’t be such a high number of divorces, I believe in gay marriage because gay men and women should have to go through divorces just like hetrosexuals!

But back to DVD’s. The latest commercial against the downloading of movies from the evil internet features Pele, the greatest footballer ever. He tells us not to download movies. He can rest assured, I will never download V for Victory so his starring role is safe.

You know why people download movies? Because they don’t want to pay money to sit in the cinema to be told not to download the movie. They don’t want to sit through 10 minutes of commericals that they see everyday on television. And they don’t want to spend 15 minutes trying to open the DVD case to see the barebones movie that will be re-released as a speical edition with added features and bonuses the month after the barebones is released.

Book Review – King Con – Stephen J Cannell

A conman who is viciously beaten by a mob boss after being found cheating at cards plots his revenge, aided by a prosecutor who failed to get the mob boss put away.

Stephen J Cannell is a man who is responsible for many tv shows including The A-Team, 21 Jump Street, The Greatest American Hero, Hardcastle and McCormack, The Rockford Files, and Hunter. Cannell creates a world filled with grifters and con men. The main characters, Beano Bates & Victoria Hart are opposites who come together for their common goal of justice. They are well written and crafted although it is obvious from page 76 what will happen at the end.

This is a great book, filled with some violence but nothing that is uncalled for. The cons are very impressive, not only for how well they are done, but for the simplicity of them. The plot is great, with enough to keep the reader turning the pages as fast as he can.

Really enjoyed King Con and will look forward to reading more books by Mr Stephen J Cannell.
