Book Review – Archangel – Gerald Seymour

Michael Holly is an engineer who is asked to pass on a package during a visit to Russia. He is caught, convicted as a spy and sent to a harsh prison for 15 years.
The story begins after Holly is convicted but before he arrives at prison. Intercut with the background of what happened, and who Holly is as a person, the story flows quickly and powerfully. This is a book that was nearly impossible to put down. A fantastic story, one that I hope to read again and again. Reminded me of the way Nelson DeMille has written some books, informative yet never boring. Seymour avoids the obvious and instead creates one of the best novels I have read in years. Very powerful and moving.
Bad Driving Rant Alert!!
This is a special post, one that goes out to one special person, a person who is unknown for I do not know your name, if you are male or female, if you are old or young. All I know about you is that you drive a Toyota Sienna and you should drive off a cliff in the very near future.
Coming back from a quick shop at lunch time, I find myself behind a slow moving Toyota Sienna. This is not a bad thing, I have good tunes playing loudly, I am not late, I am infact in a slightly mellow mood. All things are good.
I come to a crossroads, and the mini van ahead of me drives in the same direction that I am taking, still not a problem.
So we are driving north down, well, North St. At the end of the road is a set of traffic lights. Going east and west is Commissioners Road West, a fairly busy road. You can continue north but it is the entrance to Springbank park, a very nice piece of land with trees, sports fields and the like on it.
The Toyota Sienna indicates half way down North street that it intends to turn left, requiring a change of lights. (A note for those non Canadians, you can turn right on a red light as long as you are not going to crash into a moving vehicle).
The problems begin when the much mentioned Toyota Sienna slows to a stop, at least two car lengths before the stop line. Again, this is not too unexpected as a large dump truck turns right onto North Street and takes the corner a little wide.
But the Toyota Sienna doesn't move after the dump truck has passed. I sit behind and watch as the traffic lights go through the routine, but with no car technically at the lights (just a few car lengths away), the lights cycle back. The flashing red lights that indicate peds can cross goes back to white. This happens four times while I am slowly edging my car closer to the mini van wondering how much damage I might sustain if I accidentally push the bumbling driver into oncoming traffic.
Finally, and obviously without getting the point, the Toyota Sienna turns on the right turn signal and drives off in the opposite direction, allowing myself, now not so mellow and calm to move forward less than 10 foot and trigger the traffic lights to change.
While it only lasted a few minutes, the Toyota driver created a 10 car lineup to turn left. So, if you were driving a Toyota Sienna through London, Ontario this lunch time, and you got fed up waiting for a red light to change, please do the world a favour and flush yourself down the toilet, you are too stupid to continue to partake in this world!
Book Review – Zero Hour – Benjamin Miller
A volcano in the antarctic creates a world threatening hurricane. This would be a bad thing so people try to stop nature.
I previously read another Benjamin Miller book, Deep Current but obviously haven’t learnt my lesson yet. Its not a badly written book, but the plot does stray into the realms of unbelievability quite a lot. It also seems to jump from point to point, almost as if the author thought that this part of the story is boring so I’ll jump over it or summerize it in only a couple of paragraphs.
Not a great book, not really a good book eiter.
Fantasy Hockey
Fantasy Hockey is over for another season, 3rd out of 12 isn't bad. I would have done a lot better if I have actually kept some of my players longer… Still, live and learn.

Book Review – Precipice – Bob Langley
Several years ago, a Russian spaceship was shot down by an organization inside the US military. Now the spaceship is sending out a signal and both nations race to find it.
A book that starts off in one place, then moves to another with ease. Good characters, fairly fast paced action and some good twists.
Started off slow but enjoyed it at the end!
The Bionic Grandmother
My mum had her knee replaced on Monday. Now I know this is a common occurance these days but not for my mum. She seems to be doing well according to my dad, who is missing her at home big time. Its nice to see my parents miss each other when they are apart, the same way I feel when I am apart from my computer, I mean wife. Hopefully my mum will have a lot less pain and will be able to walk around normally in a few months.
Cows with guns
Yes, I know its old but it still makes me smile every time I watch it. If you don't know the story already, pay a visit to The Story Behind Cows With Guns
