Graphic Novel Review – V for Vendetta – Alan Moore

About the Book
In an alternate future in which Germany wins WWII and Britain becomes a fascist state, a vigilante named “V” stalks the streets of London trying to free England of its ideological chains.

This is not a graphic novel filled with happiness, joy and beauty. This is the tale of a country that has become controlled by a government who watches, listens and knows everything about everyone. From the horrific roots of the story, told in flashback manner, to the climax of the plot, V for Vendetta does not side step the evil and criminal acts that cause this story to comeabout. It is interesting to see similarites between a story written in the early 80s by a disillusioned Englishman and what may be happening in the US right now. This too is to become a movie, and I hope that the movie makers do not take the easy way out and remove the difficult moments, the painful scenes and the horror.

Graphic Novel Review – 300 – Frank Miller

From the Publisher
300 is a story of war and defiance as only Frank Miller can tell. Featuring the watercolor talents of painter Lynn Varley, 300 marks the first collaboration for these two creators since 1990′s Elektra Lives Again. The five-part series is collected into a beautiful, 88-page hardcover volume, with each two-page spread from the comic presented as it was originally intended – as a single undivided page, greatly enhancing the graphic and narrative power of this immortal tale of heroic sacrifice.

This is a very stirring piece about an outnumbered army and the courage to sacrifice everything for their country. It will soon be made into a movie and if the movie is half as brutal as the graphic novel, it will be very bloody. A large departure from the usual graphic novels but one that is very well illustrated and told. Looking forward to the movie!

Movie Review – Charade (1963)

Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn star in a funny mystery about a woman who has something that several men want and who appear to be willing to kill for it.

A brilliant movie, that sparkles with chemistry and one liners that literally zing back and forth. This is a great movie that combines a twisting plot with humour and style!

If you have never seen it, treat yourself!

Book Review – The Closers – Michael Connelly

From the Publisher
He walked away from the job three years ago. But Harry Bosch cannot resist the call to join the elite Open/Unsolved Unit. His mission: solve murders whose investigations were flawed, stalled, or abandoned to L.A.’s tides of crime. With some people openly rooting for his failure, Harry catches the case of a teenager dragged off to her death on Oat Mountain, and traces the DNA on the murder weapon to a small-time criminal. But something bigger and darker beckons, and Harry must battle to fit all the pieces together. Shaking cages and rattling ghosts, he will push the rules to the limit-and expose the kind of truth that shatters lives, ends careers, and keeps the dead whispering in the night…

It seems to have been years since the last Harry Bosch book but its here and its…… its something. It felt like it was missing something for most of the story. I don’t know if it was the plot that perhaps slowed down Harry or perhaps Harry has with age slowed down. Either way, the story just doesn’t seem to fizz like many of the other Bosch books. That said, the ending was good and definatly fizzed!!

Movie Review – Kinky Boots

A traditional british shoe factory faces closure until the son of the recently deceased owner comes up with a unique product for them to make.

In the vein of Brassed Off, The Full Monty and Billy Elliot, this is a great brit movie. A load of humour, emotion and while some of the plot turns were predictable, it doesn’t matter because its so much fun to watch. To see the villan from Serenity transformed into a high heeled, whip snapping drag queen, I mean transvestite, is a strange thing to observe but he plays the character to perfection. This is a movie to watch time and time again. Of course, those west of the Atlantic may not ‘get’ it as much as those in the homeland but its still a brilliant movie!!

Book Review – The Deep Blue Alibi – Paul Levine

From the Publisher
They are Florida’s most mismatched legal duo–one a glamorous Miami blue blood, the other a Coconut Grove beach bum. And when they get together, you can throw every law right out the window….

What do you get when you mix beautiful people, family secrets, and a yacht washed up on Sunset Key with a hundred grand in cash and a dying man? If you’re Steve Solomon, you see a case that can get Solomon & Lord off the ground. If you’re Victoria Lord, you see a golden opportunity to go out on your own. With her uncle a murder suspect and her hunky ex-boyfriend back in the picture, Victoria is pushing to take control as Solomon struggles to keep from losing it.

As an explosive trial looms, they’re fighting against time, the law, and each other–to expose a killer who came to paradise…and hasn’t left.

Oh my gawd. I was laughing out loud a lot with this book. It isn’t a book of jokes but every joke seems to hit its target. With more Jimmy Buffett references than License to Chill, I would hope that JB is getting a cut of the profits!! Fantastic book. Loved it!

Book Review – Contest – Matthew Reilly

From the Publisher
THE CONTEST: YOUR WORST NIGHTMARE COME TRUE Dr. Stephen Swain has found himself locked in the after-hours darkness of the New York Public Library. It isn’t a mistake. He’s been entombed in the historic sanctuary for a reason–as the guest of an unknown host, chosen for a night of fun and games. He’s unprepared. He’s afraid. And he’s not alone.
Six other contestants roam the black halls, room by room, floor by floor, in the dead silence. Each strapped with an explosive set to detonate should they escape before the night is over. The terms are simple: seven players enter–only one will leave.
Now Swain must navigate the labyrinth to outwit the unknown moves of his mysterious opponents, and to outlast the unimaginable dangers that await him. Against insurmountable odds the contest has begun. Should he win, the greatest, most unfathomable terror lies at the night’s end: the very reason behind the game…

An action filled book full of aliens, violence and, erm, action. Started slowly but built up the pace. Matthew Reilly has yet to fail to entertain with his books!
