Book Review – The Arctic Incident – Eoin Colfer

From the Publisher

Artemis is at boarding school in Ireland when he suddenly receives an urgent video email from Russia. In it is a plea from his father, who has been kidnapped by the Russian Mafiya. As Artemis rushes to his rescue, he is stopped by Captain Holly Short of the LEPrecon fairy police. But this time, instead of battling the fairies, he is going to have to join forces with them if he wants to save one of the few people in the world he loves.

A fast read but very enjoyable. Its nice to be able to read a book with no violence (well not much), no language and no sex………well….kinda anyway. A nice change of pace. Well written books with style, great characters and a world that has been created just below the surface of our world!! Can’t wait for the next one.

Book Review – Freefall – Judith & Garfield Reeves-Stevens

From the Publisher

The year is 2008

The next race to the Moon has begun

Not to make new discoveries

But to bury old secrets

THE PLACE The International Space Station. Docked to it, the Space Shuttle Constitution. Crewed by ten astronauts trained to recover the $100-million cargo aboard the first privately launched lunar sample-return mission.

THE EVENT Sabotage. The containers from the Moon hold more than rocks and moondust, and there are those who are willing to kill to keep that knowledge from the world.

So begins the riveting new novel by acclaimed writing team Judith & Garfield Reeves-Stevens — a relentless tale of high-tech conspiracy and suspense that reaches back to the darkest secrets of the space race of the 1960s, and ahead to the startling new technologies that will drive us to the Moon in the next decade.

Freefall marks the long-awaited return of the heroes of Icefire — the Reeves-Stevens novel Stephen King hailed as: “The best suspense novel of its kind since The Hunt for Red October.”

Now U.S. Navy Captain Mitch Webber, outspoken oceanographer Cory Rey, and Air Force Major Wilhemina Bailey of the United States Space Command are reunited in an even more harrowing adventure that pits them against the ruthless inheritors of a staggering conspiracy that could change history.

From the covert infiltration of China”s most secure aerospace facility and the stirring heroism of astronauts and cosmonauts confronting disaster in space, to sudden violence on ordinary suburban streets and the startling revelation of America”s most secret space program, Freefall is a nonstop explosive read that in true Reeves-Stevens fashion makes readers wonder where truth ends and fiction begins.

Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeell it isn’t really bad but you finish the book feeling a little empty insde, left wanting more. It isn’t THAT technical and it does seem to have a good plot buuuuuut it just doesn’t flow like some other books.

Movie Review – Lord of War

A gun runner’s story. Nick Cage is the voice of this story, the story of a man who sells guns for a living.

Wow, I was expecting a funny movie about guns, instead I got a thought provoking movie about gun running, commitment, and what is important in life. While at times it was witty, there were other times were it was shocking. Children missing limbs balances out quick witted escapes from the ATF.

A MUCH better movie than I was expecting. Very well made and it did make me think!!

Book Review – The Kill Artist – Daniel Silva

From the Publisher
Former Israeli intelligence operative Gabriel Allon is drawn back into the game to take on a cunning terrorist on one last killing spree, a Palestinian zealot who played a dark part in Gabriel’s past. And what begins as a manhunt turns into a globe-spanning duel fueled by both political intrigue and deep personal passions…

Not a bad book, a little slow in the middle, lacked enough action to be a great book but definatly not a bad book.

Book Review – Black Ice – Matt Dickinson

From the Publisher

Antarctica is the coldest place on earth, and it’s where Lauren Burgess makes a scientific discovery that will transform human life. But then a strange SOS from the frozen wasteland puts everything at risk.

A rescue has been mounted through the toughest landscape in the world to save a great polar explorer. But is Julian Fitzgerald all he seems? And can human ruthlessness be even colder than the most savage climate?

What starts off as a potential enclosed in an ice station over winter drama, soon disolves into a race across the antarctic ice, similar to Alistair MacLean books “Night Without End” or Colin Forbes “Target Five”. Not a bad story, not bad pace, but it lacked something that made it a real page turner. Not a bad enough book to stop me reading another by the author. The main characters were interesting enough but the villain of the story was so over the top as to be totally unbelievable. Not only was he completely fruity loops but to be so single tracked even to the extent of risking his own life didn’t make sense. The ending was sudden, without any follow through as to what the consquences were, which after creating such an evil person, was needed to give balance to the overall story.

Movie Review – The Transporter 2

The original was a great movie, classy, very french and very stylish. Jason Statham kicked butt.

I wanted to like the sequel and for the most part I did, but cheap and cheesy computer special effects spoiled the potential blockbuster for me! The first scenes are again amazing, even topping the bus station fight from the original. It just didn’t flow like the original though and there was just not enough to cover up the poop. Certain there will be a third Transporter though!!
